CHAPTER 12

When she got home, Jane tried not to think about the investigation and give her mind a break for a while. But she found herself mulling over the blanks she kept coming up with, as if the more she thought about it she’d be able to conjure answers out of thin air. Eventually, she’d been able to distract herself by making dinner which helped push away all thoughts of the investigation for a little while.

Jane was just pulling out the tater tot casserole from the oven when her phone began to ring. When she checked the screen it showed the call was from Gloria Hawthorne. For a moment, Jane considered not answering it, but she knew if she didn’t, Gloria would probably call back later, so it was better to get it over with now. Holding back the grumble that wanted to cross her lips, she forced herself to smile and answered.

“Jane, it’s Gloria. I was calling to see how things are going,” she said.

“So nice to hear from you,” Jane replied sweetly. In truth, she’d been hoping to not hear from her. She didn’t really feel like she’d made any progress yet. At least, not the kind where she felt comfortable reporting back to her. When the phone remained silent, Jane sighed. Clearly, Gloria wanted some sort of a report.

“Well, so far everyone seems to want to point their finger at someone else. But I’m making my way through the list and talking to everyone to find out what they saw or might know. It takes time, but I feel like I’m getting closer to finding out.”

Jane didn’t lie, it was just a confident answer.

“Good,” Gloria purred on the other end. “We’re still on for this weekend then?”

Jane had a feeling it was more of a statement than a question. “I’m doing my absolute best to be ready in time,” Jane replied as she dumped a bag of frozen corn into a pot and put it on the stove.

“Good, that’s what I wanted to hear. I have been dutifully securing RSVPs from everyone to make sure they’re going to attend. We’re also still planning to make the painting a tantalizing temptation for the person who tried to steal it last time. With any luck, our combined efforts will result in sorting this all out.”

“My fingers are crossed,” Jane replied as she dropped some butter in the pan and began to stir it into the corn. She thought that was the end of the conversation and was prepared to hang up when Gloria surprised her.

“Have you chosen a dress for our special evening?” Her voice was softer, almost as if she were afraid to ask.

Jane hadn’t even looked in her closet, but she replied, “Of course. No problem. I have the perfect thing.”

“Wonderful, I just thought I’d ask. Let me know if you need anything,” Gloria said before ending the call.

Jane lowered her phone to the counter and went back to focusing on dinner. Under her breath, she couldn’t help but mutter.
